What To Wear
Make Your Visit A Comfortable One
The weather on Alcatraz is unpredictable and subject to change unexpectedly, so be sure to dress in layers...bring along a light jacket or sweater, no matter how nice the day begins!
Sunglasses and sunblock are recommended, since sunlight reflecting off the bay’s surface can be dangerously bright even on a cold, windy day.
The roads on Alcatraz are steep, and your exploration can include stairways and gravel walkways...wear comfortable walking shoes with grip-type soles. Sandals, leather-soled shoes, high heels, and open-toe shoes are not recommended.
Rain occurs frequently during winter and early spring. About half of the Alcatraz Island tour route is along outside roadways without shelter from the rain, so dress for possible wet weather. (Rain gear is available for purchase at Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing and in the Island bookstores.)
Keep your possessions with you at all times. Lockers are not provided on Alcatraz for storing visitors’ items. Large objects, such as oversized backpacks, luggage or bikes are not allowed on the Island.
Luggage storage is available at the PIER 39 Welcome Center. Please call the California Welcome Center at 415.981.1280 for more information.
NOTE: Backpacks, handbags, parcels and packages are subject to search at any time for security purposes and cannot exceed 16” x 20”. Bags larger than 16” x 20” are not allowed on Alcatraz Island.
