Alcatraz Cruises To Receive Prestigious Environmental Award
(SAN FRANCISCO, March 21, 2017) – Acterra has announced that Alcatraz Cruises has been selected to
receive a 2017 Acterra Business Environmental Award in the Environmental Project category for its
Hornblower Hybrid Fleet.
Alcatraz Cruises is the only passenger vessel company in North America to operate a fleet of hybrid vessels. The Hornblower Hybrid Fleet uses power generated by ten-foot-tall wind turbines and photovoltaic solar arrays covering the awning on the top decks to transport 1.7 million passengers annually. To supplement the solar panels and wind turbines, the Hornblower Hybrid Fleet has Tier 2 marine diesel engines, which are cleaner, more fuel-efficient, and significantly reduce the company’s overall carbon footprint. Alcatraz Cruises delivers many more environmental benefits through their Respect Our Planet commitment, including a 94% landfill diversion rate, a green purchasing policy with 80% local, green conscious vendors, and waste bins made from recycled milk jugs in a wind-powered facility.
The Acterra Business Environmental Awards is one of the San Francisco Bay Area’s oldest and most prestigious environmental recognition programs. Initiated in 1990, it is considered a heavyweight among award programs due to its rigorous application and judging process. Executive Director of Acterra, Adam Stern, said, “At a time when environmental policy is being challenged at the federal level, these award winners send a powerful message that Bay Area companies, public agencies, and schools remain committed to cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable business practices. Acterra is proud to recognize the achievements of these innovative organizations.”
Alcatraz Cruises will be honored at the 2017 Acterra Business Environmental Awards Ceremony & Reception on Wednesday, May 24th from 6-9PM at Intuit Inc. in Mountain View. For complete information about the 2017 awardees and ceremony, visit acterra.org/bea.
