Alcatraz Cruises And Alcatraz Island Services Commitment To A Cleaner Environment

(San Francisco, CA) Alcatraz Cruises is committed to preventing pollution, reducing waste, conserving water and energy, and educating our guests and employees on environmental stewardship. Through our corporate management program, called `Respect Our Planet’, we focus on the continual evaluation and improvement of how we treat the environment, the health and safety of our employees and the quality of the overall guest experience.
Alcatraz Cruises is currently certified for ISO standards 9001: 2000 and 14001:2004 and OHSAS 18001:1999.These certifications reflect the alignment to the highest standards of quality management, environmental management and health and safety management.

Careful consideration was made in selecting the food and beverages served in the Café at Alcatraz Landing and on board the vessels. The menus include all-natural juices, organic coffee and freshly baked pastries from a local bakery that specializes in using all-natural and whole grain ingredients.

Our primary service boats are among the cleanest vessels on the San Francisco bay. As part of our commitment to clean air, we replaced the old engines with brand new, ultra-efficient engines that comply with the EPA’s Tier II clean air standards; this is currently the highest rating a marine vessel can have from the EPA. One of our vessels is currently equipped with the newest Selective Catalytic Reduction unit (SCR) and another vessel is currently having one installed. The SCR units further reduce emission from our engines by neutralizing the carbon in the engine exhaust. Initial emission testing is showing an emissions reduction of 90% when compared to the prior concessionaires vessel. In addition to being significantly more fuel efficient, our lighter-weight boats are quiet and, through panoramic windows, offer excellent views on the scenic trip to Alcatraz Island.

We are working in partnership with the National Park Service to run the generators (which supply 100% of the power on Alcatraz Island) on renewable and environmentally-friendly bio-diesel fuel. Alcatraz Island Services, the company providing fuel and maintenance services to the island, purchases carbon offsets.

Alcatraz Cruises is in the design and pre-construction phase of a new, cleaner vessel. This revolutionary, custom designed, hybrid diesel-electric vessel will be the first of its kind anywhere in the United States.

Employees are encouraged to recycle at work and home. Alcatraz Cruises will recycle batteries, inkjet cartridges, and old cell phones or pagers for employees.

Printed materials used for Alcatraz Cruises, including tickets, rack brochures and safety information cards are printed on 100% post-consumer waste recycled paper with soy-based ink. We encourage our visitors who elect to print their ticket at home to use recycled paper.
