Friends of Civil War Alcatraz and the National Park Service are pleased to announce a Civil War Living History Day on Alcatraz Island Saturday, October 4, 2008. Come learn all about Civil War Alcatraz!
From the 1850's until a number of years after the Civil War the military installation on Alcatraz Island was the largest fortification west of the Mississippi River, offering protection for San Francisco, the surrounding cities, and San Francisco Bay. Come learn about all the Civil War island structures including brick walls, the guardhouse and sally port, the lower level of the Citadel, gardens, and battery remnants.
On October 4th 150 Civil War re-enactors will showcase activities of the Civil War period including drills, marching, prisoner escort, encampment cooking, and guard duty. A uniformed band will perform Civil War period music throughout the day. An artillery group will use the 24-pound Howitzer on display in the Sally port to illustrate the techniques of loading and firing a large gun. Alcatraz Rangers and Volunteers will provide interpretative programs regarding the Civil War period.
